October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
New York considers domestic violence a form of assault against a family or household member. As such, it can be categorized as a high-level misdemeanor or felony with imprisonment and steep fines used as criminal penalties upon conviction. Domestic violence cases can also be brought to family law or civil courts. The result of losing those cases can be the removal of your rights as a parent or a member of your household, such as forced relocation.
